- The NCTA Equestrian Team is planning to host a fun day type activity on Saturday, December 4. More info as it becomes available.

Sandhills Hunter Jumper Clinic and Ride a Class: New this summer is our clinic and “Ride a Class” which will be held July 9, 10 & 11 in Curtis, NE at the NTCA Indoor Arena. “Ride a Class” is like a practice schooling show with the clinician critiquing the classes after each round or class. An entry form is available at the Plain Bay Mare website.
The clinician will be Melissa Pienett from the Omaha area. Melissa is a great clinician who rides, trains, and teaches Hunters/Jumpers and Dressage at the Elkhorn Equestrian Center.
We will have Friday evening flat sessions. Saturday will be jumping sessions and one flat session. Sunday is the “Ride a Class Show”. “Ride a Class” will be set up similar to a show but after each class the clinician will critic what we did in the class and give us suggestions on what we should do. Show attire is optional, but hard hats and boots are required.
Several lodging options are available in Curtis, including the Winfield Inn, 308-367-4677, and the Aggie Bed and Breakfast, 308-367-5510.

It is a nationally supported Tractor Supply event. We will be having local breeders with their horses set up around the parking lot to show off their breeds and animals. Also we have local vets, farriers, massage therapists, chiropractors, judges, etc lined up for various demos and discussions. Our first annual tack swap is set up for this day as well, space is still available, call the store 308-532-2135. We are going to have around $2000 in drawings and giveaways through out the day. Lunch on site. Pony rides with a signed waiver.
Cody Mavericks 4-H Horse Show, North Platte, July 10: Registration starts at 7:30 and show starts at 8:30 a.m. CT. The show will be at the Lincoln Co. Fairgrounds, North Platte, and IS part of the Greater Nebraska Horse Show Circuit. A flyer can be downloaded at the Circuit's website.
Ranch Horse Versatility Clinic and Show, Pawnee Springs Ranch, July 10-11: The NVRHA is featuring Jay and Gena Henson, Hugoton, KS, as clinicians and judges for this 2-day event near Maxwell. A flyer is available at the Plain Bay Mare website. I haven't heard if the riding spots are filled, but to find out contact Greg Eshleman, (308) 520-9143; Steve Boeshart, (308) 530-2369; or Rita Lauby, (970) 481-1041 or ltlauby@ymail.com. I think the show starts at 8 a.m. CT with English flat classes, followed by showmanship, western performance, and of course, games.

Competitive Trail Challenge, September 18, 2010, Cider Mill Pasture, Paxton: This event is being sponsored by the Heartland Saddle Club. Volunteers are still needed. If you want to be part of the planning committee and make decisions about what obstacles will be used and/or ride the CTC route ahead of time – we’d love to have your help, but you won’t be able to compete if part of this committee. If you want to participate in the CTC there are other ways to help out with events of the day and still be able to ride. Just a reminder, this Saturday, April 17, is the Shaggy Show in Curtis. This is the big money-maker for the NCTA Equestrian Team and any and all participation is greatly appreciated. I know last year's show had a great turnout. In an attempt to keep things rolling, this year they will be splitting the arena and running two showmanship classes at a time. English classes kick off at 8 AM CST, followed by halter, western performance and last but not least, speed events. For more info, a flyer is available at Plain Bay Mare.

The Sandhills Hunter/Jumper Association spring clinic is May 14-16. It will be held at the NTCA Indoor Arena in Curtis, NE with Martha Deeds as the clinician. A flyer is posted at Plain Bay Mare.
The annual Ft. Robinson Horse Camp is scheduled for June 10-12. A brochure form are available at the Dawes County Extension web site.

Steerhead Arena, Hershey, is hosting a Horse Show Clinic, May 8-9, featuring Les Zadina, Ogallala. It is for beginners to advanced, youth and adults, or anyone wanting to improve their training and exhibiting skills.
Les is a certified judge in 14 different horse associations and judging in 25 states. Les has judged 5 world competitions: Pinto World, AMHA World, Buckskin World, AMHR World and Buckskin Congress . It is limited to 45 riders ($40 each for riders from the same family). Spectators can audit for $10. Pre-registration is required by May 1, 2010.
Topics include Conformation To Win, Conditioning To Win, Grooming To Win, Proper Tack and Equipment, Proper Attire for the Show Ring, Showing To The Judge, Proper Ring Ethics and Procedures, Showmanship “Tips and Tricks” for Youth and Adults, What the Judge Looks For In a Pleasure Horse Going Down the Rail, What the Judge Looks For In A Horsemanship Class.

Horse stuff for April 6
Wow, long time, no blog. I'm adding these in the order I received them (and copied verbatim from the e-mail), so I apologize for not being in chronological order. Here goes...
Shaggy Show (April 17) info available: (from the NCTA Equestrian Team) There are a couple small changes that have been made this year that are on the show bill so please look it over. Again this year we are associated with the Greater Nebraska Horse Show Curcuit and you can register your 4-H rider at this show for points for the end of the year banquet again this year. Due to this association we have agreed to make things equal for all the 4-H aged rider and they are required to wear 4-H attire to compete in the division or they will be required to ride in the open 19 & over classes. Also, a big things is we will be spliting the arena for Showmanship classes and will run 2 classes concurrently to help quicken the show unless there are problems of shared horses to work out. If there is such a problem please address me (Kim Anderson) with it so things can work together well. Also we're having an early entry drawing prize again this year so you can return your entries via email or snail mail to us to register for the prize.

WHERE: Julesburg Welcome Center, River road 28, E-W parallel to I-76, off Hwy. 385
(Registration/Coffee/Donuts before we caravan to location!)
WHEN: 8-8:30am is registration. Caravan will leave Welcome Center for ride location at
8:45am. RIDERS WILL LEAVE ON RIDE AT 9:30am! Morning ride will circle east through various ranches. Noon meal served back at trailers; porta-potties provided. Afternoon ride will circle the hills to the west and conclude back at trailers at approximately 3:30pm.
SPECIAL ATTRACTION: The actual Pony Express route is along this river road, with Fort Sedgwick I&II, and Julesburg I&II sites designated by historical markers, Devil’s Dive, and many more interesting tidbits that “Trapper Gene” will share with those not on the ride, and maybe if interested , with riders upon their return!
WHY: To raise money for the 2010 “150 YEAR”NATIONAL PONY EXPRESS CELEBRATION, June 19th BBQ, while enjoying a good ride and camaraderie!

Interested in competitive trail riding and other horse-related activities? Meeting April 1o: (from Twila Brown) As the temperatures are warming, it's time to bring out the shedding blade and dust off the saddle for another summer of activities with your favorite 4-legged friends. Some of you may say, what activities??? Well as most of you know, I look forward to planning rides and meeting up with many friends, to spend time in the saddle.
This year, there has been enough interest in our area, that a small group of people have proposed getting together and planning both local and further distance rides. We are proposing that with the help of area horse enthusiasts, a group focusing on trail riding in the south central portion of the state, be formed. There are several riding groups in the North Platte area, but we would like to target many of the surrounding, smaller town's people with an interest in riding new places and meeting new people.
Part of our discussion has centered around assembling a group to put together a competitive trail competition. There is a national organization centered in Texas called the ACTHA (American Competitive Trail Horse Association) which helps promote and organize between 300-1000 rides each year across the US. The proceeds from these rides can be used locally by an organized group as a fund raiser or can be used as a money making project for local charities. In an attempt to include all area towns and decide whether to pursue the possibility of forming a local group, we would like to invite all of you to a dutch treat, night out at Butch's Restaurant in Hershey (located just south and half a block west of the main railroad crossing). Looking for a saddle: The Plain Bay Mare is looking for a saddle that fits her and her rider. Her rider needs a 17" seat, but might be able to get by with a 16.5" in a pinch (get the pun!). Anyway, she would prefer a ranch cutter, but would look at a cutter or roping saddle. The Plain Bay Mare's rider is no credit to roping society, but has been known to snub some fairly large horses and would prefer a saddle that held up to the job. And contrary to popular belief, while the Plain Bay Mare is flush with flesh, she is not flush with cash. If you have any leads, please e-mail plainbaymare@gmail.com. There is the possibility of the Plain Bay Mare's 17" Teskey's ranch cutter being available for sale or trade if a saddle is found.

Shaggy Show (April 17) info available: (from the NCTA Equestrian Team) There are a couple small changes that have been made this year that are on the show bill so please look it over. Again this year we are associated with the Greater Nebraska Horse Show Curcuit and you can register your 4-H rider at this show for points for the end of the year banquet again this year. Due to this association we have agreed to make things equal for all the 4-H aged rider and they are required to wear 4-H attire to compete in the division or they will be required to ride in the open 19 & over classes. Also, a big things is we will be spliting the arena for Showmanship classes and will run 2 classes concurrently to help quicken the show unless there are problems of shared horses to work out. If there is such a problem please address me (Kim Anderson) with it so things can work together well. Also we're having an early entry drawing prize again this year so you can return your entries via email or snail mail to us to register for the prize.

May 22 Trailride at Julesburg, CO:
WHERE: Julesburg Welcome Center, River road 28, E-W parallel to I-76, off Hwy. 385
(Registration/Coffee/Donuts before we caravan to location!)
WHEN: 8-8:30am is registration. Caravan will leave Welcome Center for ride location at
8:45am. RIDERS WILL LEAVE ON RIDE AT 9:30am! Morning ride will circle east through various ranches. Noon meal served back at trailers; porta-potties provided. Afternoon ride will circle the hills to the west and conclude back at trailers at approximately 3:30pm.
SPECIAL ATTRACTION: The actual Pony Express route is along this river road, with Fort Sedgwick I&II, and Julesburg I&II sites designated by historical markers, Devil’s Dive, and many more interesting tidbits that “Trapper Gene” will share with those not on the ride, and maybe if interested , with riders upon their return!
WHY: To raise money for the 2010 “150 YEAR”NATIONAL PONY EXPRESS CELEBRATION, June 19th BBQ, while enjoying a good ride and camaraderie!
COST: $25/ADULTS; $15/YOUTH* AND 4-H CLUBS; $10 NON-RIDERS FOR MEAL. Advance registration is required for all categories. Meal is included in fee, and will be served by our Colorado Pony Express Chapter. No riding double this year, and young children must be accompanied by an adult. Souvenirs (t’s, caps, mugs, calendars), raffle* and door prizes will be on hand at noon! (*Raffle is for a commemorative gun being-drawing later at the June 19th Pony Express BBQ!)

Interested in competitive trail riding and other horse-related activities? Meeting April 1o: (from Twila Brown) As the temperatures are warming, it's time to bring out the shedding blade and dust off the saddle for another summer of activities with your favorite 4-legged friends. Some of you may say, what activities??? Well as most of you know, I look forward to planning rides and meeting up with many friends, to spend time in the saddle.
This year, there has been enough interest in our area, that a small group of people have proposed getting together and planning both local and further distance rides. We are proposing that with the help of area horse enthusiasts, a group focusing on trail riding in the south central portion of the state, be formed. There are several riding groups in the North Platte area, but we would like to target many of the surrounding, smaller town's people with an interest in riding new places and meeting new people.
Part of our discussion has centered around assembling a group to put together a competitive trail competition. There is a national organization centered in Texas called the ACTHA (American Competitive Trail Horse Association) which helps promote and organize between 300-1000 rides each year across the US. The proceeds from these rides can be used locally by an organized group as a fund raiser or can be used as a money making project for local charities. Horse for sale: Dolly is a 16-year-old sweet mare that is well-patterned in barrels and poles. She was on the track as a two-year and three-year old. Then she was extensively patterned and lightly competed on until she was about seven. After that, she was a brood mare for a while. Now, she has been patterned again and is ready to go. She has been ridden on trails, in pastures, around cattle and nothing bothers her. She is NOT the boss mare in a herd, but gets along with everyone. Ranch Horse Versatility Event July 10-11 @ Maxwell, NE: July10-11 the Pawnee Springs Ranch in Maxwell, Nebraska will host a National Versatility Ranch Horse Assoc. Clinic & Schooling Competition. Clinicians will be Jay and Gena Henson from Hugoton, KS. Results of the competition will apply toward NVRHA points and the finals held in September. The dinner and social Saturday night is $20 per person. Outdoor stalls available at $10 per horse. Cost for the clinic & competition is $275 and is limited to 20 riders.
