Sandhills Hunter Jumper Clinic and Ride a Class: New this summer is our clinic and “Ride a Class” which will be held July 9, 10 & 11 in Curtis, NE at the NTCA Indoor Arena. “Ride a Class” is like a practice schooling show with the clinician critiquing the classes after each round or class. An entry form is available at the Plain Bay Mare website.

The clinician will be Melissa Pienett from the Omaha area. Melissa is a great clinician who rides, trains, and teaches Hunters/Jumpers and Dressage at the Elkhorn Equestrian Center.

We will have Friday evening flat sessions. Saturday will be jumping sessions and one flat session. Sunday is the “Ride a Class Show”. “Ride a Class” will be set up similar to a show but after each class the clinician will critic what we did in the class and give us suggestions on what we should do. Show attire is optional, but hard hats and boots are required.

Several lodging options are available in Curtis, including the Winfield Inn, 308-367-4677, and the Aggie Bed and Breakfast, 308-367-5510.

The goal of Sandhills Hunter/Jumper Association is to promote English riding so we try to keep entries low and only try to break even on the clinics. Please let Erin know if you are attending the clinic. You can reach Erin at (308) 870-3050 or erinleigh86@gpcom.net.

Drive in Lewellen, July 9, 10, 11, 2010: This was a tentatively scheduled event, so if you're interested, please contact Penny Ramsey at 970-356-7333 or bluemountainseed@msn.com before hauling.

I haven't heard if the riding spots are filled, but to find out contact Greg Eshleman, (308) 520-9143; Steve Boeshart, (308) 530-2369; or Rita Lauby, (970) 481-1041 or ltlauby@ymail.com. The Plain Bay Mare would love to be there, but her partners in crime are committed elsewhere.

Open Horse Show, Gothenburg, August 7: I believe this is the 3rd year for this very fun show open to all ages. There's a hard copy of the showbill somewhere in my tsunami of a house, so Tim Gibbens, if you're reading this, please e-mail me a showbill. I think the show starts at 8 a.m. CT with English flat classes, followed by showmanship, western performance, and of course, games.

Gymkhana, Bertrand, August 14: Classes include keyhole, barrels, poles, flag race, figure 8 barrels and trail race. For more info, contact Ruby , 308-991-0294, or Steph, 308-472-5353. There is a flyer available at Plain Bay Mare.

Les Vogt, September 10-12, NCTA, Curtis: Last time I checked there was possibly one riding spot left. Even if you don't want to or can't afford to ride, auditors are encouraged and NCTA plans to feed you if you RSVP. I've been watching some of Les's DVDs and lets just say the man has a lot to say, so auditors will be able to pick up a lot of info as well. A flyer is available at the Plain Bay Mare website. Barring massive injury, the Plain Bay Mare will there. For more info, please contact Roy Cole at rcole3@unl.edu.

Competitive Trail Challenge, September 18, 2010, Cider Mill Pasture, Paxton: This event is being sponsored by the Heartland Saddle Club. Volunteers are still needed. If you want to be part of the planning committee and make decisions about what obstacles will be used and/or ride the CTC route ahead of time – we’d love to have your help, but you won’t be able to compete if part of this committee. If you want to participate in the CTC there are other ways to help out with events of the day and still be able to ride. Please contact Sue McCready if you’re available at johnandsuemccready@yahoo.com.

Shiny Show, September 18, NCTA, Curtis: The date has been set, more details to follow.

And last but not least, GOOD LUCK to all the 4-Hers competing at the State 4-H Horse Expo, July 11-15, Fonner Park, Grand Island. If you're in the GI area, don't hesitate to stop by and cheer on the 4-Hers and see some pretty nice horses.

Please send any items you would like posted to plainbaymare@gmail.com.

It is for beginners to advanced, youth and adults, or anyone wanting to improve their training and exhibiting skills.

Les is a certified judge in 14 different horse associations and judging in 25 states. Les has judged 5 world competitions: Pinto World, AMHA World, Buckskin World, AMHR World and Buckskin Congress . Horse stuff for April 6

Wow, long time, no blog. I'm adding these in the order I received them (and copied verbatim from the e-mail), so I apologize for not being in chronological order. Here goes...

Shaggy Show (April 17) info available: (from the NCTA Equestrian Team) There are a couple small changes that have been made this year that are on the show bill so please look it over. Again this year we are associated with the Greater Nebraska Horse Show Curcuit and you can register your 4-H rider at this show for points for the end of the year banquet again this year. Due to this association we have agreed to make things equal for all the 4-H aged rider and they are required to wear 4-H attire to compete in the division or they will be required to ride in the open 19 & over classes. Also, a big things is we will be spliting the arena for Showmanship classes and will run 2 classes concurrently to help quicken the show unless there are problems of shared horses to work out. If there is such a problem please address me (Kim Anderson) with it so things can work together well. Also we're having an early entry drawing prize again this year so you can return your entries via email or snail mail to us to register for the prize.

Interested in competitive trail riding and other horse-related activities? Meeting April 1o: (from Twila Brown) As the temperatures are warming, it's time to bring out the shedding blade and dust off the saddle for another summer of activities with your favorite 4-legged friends. Some of you may say, what activities??? Well as most of you know, I look forward to planning rides and meeting up with many friends, to spend time in the saddle.

This year, there has been enough interest in our area, that a small group of people have proposed getting together and planning both local and further distance rides. We are proposing that with the help of area horse enthusiasts, a group focusing on trail riding in the south central portion of the state, be formed. There are several riding groups in the North Platte area, but we would like to target many of the surrounding, smaller town's people with an interest in riding new places and meeting new people.

Part of our discussion has centered around assembling a group to put together a competitive trail competition. There is a national organization centered in Texas called the ACTHA (American Competitive Trail Horse Association) which helps promote and organize between 300-1000 rides each year across the US. The proceeds from these rides can be used locally by an organized group as a fund raiser or can be used as a money making project for local charities. More information about these events can be found at www.actha.us

In an attempt to include all area towns and decide whether to pursue the possibility of forming a local group, we would like to invite all of you to a dutch treat, night out at Butch's Restaurant in Hershey (located just south and half a block west of the main railroad crossing). Supper is at 5:00MT (6:00CT) with a meeting to follow at 6:00MT (7:00CT) on Saturday, April 10th, to help us discuss the many possibilities. There have been many fun suggestions for a group to gather and do along with trail riding, and we are open to any and all suggestions. If you have the desire to be able to ride more often, see new country and meet new people, then please RSVP by Friday, April 9th, so we can be sure to reserve enough room at Butch's. If you know of anyone else that may be interested in hearing about our tentative plans, please forward their contact information to us ASAP so we might get in touch with them.

Happy Trails, Twila Brown, rtbrown@nebnet.net

Looking for a saddle: The Plain Bay Mare is looking for a saddle that fits her and her rider. Her rider needs a 17" seat, but might be able to get by with a 16.5" in a pinch (get the pun!). Anyway, she would prefer a ranch cutter, but would look at a cutter or roping saddle. The Plain Bay Mare's rider is no credit to roping society, but has been known to snub some fairly large horses and would prefer a saddle that held up to the job. And contrary to popular belief, while the Plain Bay Mare is flush with flesh, she is not flush with cash. If you have any leads, please e-mail plainbaymare@gmail.com. There is the possibility of the Plain Bay Mare's 17" Teskey's ranch cutter being available for sale or trade if a saddle is found.

As always if you have anything you would like posted here, please email it to plainbaymare@gmail.com.

Ode to the plain bay mare...

Yogi wrote this especially for Pipper:

When I awake in the morn
With a horsefly on my behind,
My true love, Pipper
Is always on my mind.

Her big brown eyes
Are beautiful cesspools of mud.
They make my heart go
Ker-thud, ker-thud, ker-thud.

She cannot be blamed
For her beauty and grace.
She can always kick my butt
In a quarter mile race.

Her cow sense is amazing
She can read 'em like a book.
If only I could pin my ears like her
And give them 'the look'.

But for now my heart is sad,
She may not know how I feel.
At least something tells me,
She hasn't given me the heel.

Pipper, your breath is like sweet clover,
And on my sleeve is hung
My heart is yours forever,
And so is my .....dung!!
(Sorry darlin' couldn't make nothin' else rhyme)

Yours forever, Yogi

PS If that Odie horse ever gives you the eye, well lets say we don't call him the 'girlie' horse for nothing!!!

Horse Stuff, March 12

My apologies for all the funky fonts and sizes, it is amazing the differences when you use 2 different browsers to edit...

Horse for sale: Dolly is a 16-year-old sweet mare that is well-patterned in barrels and poles. She was on the track as a two-year and three-year old. Then she was extensively patterned and lightly competed on until she was about seven. After that, she was a brood mare for a while. Now, she has been patterned again and is ready to go. You can view her breeding at: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/dollface+dancer She is well mannered, clips, bathes, stands for the farrier and most importantly is child safe. She has been ridden on trails, in pastures, around cattle and nothing bothers her. She is NOT the boss mare in a herd, but gets along with everyone. She is ready to help a youth or a novice adult participate in games. For more information contact Beth Hoerle @ 402.460.6569 or Julie Otero @ julie.otero@esu10.org.

Sandhills Hunter Jumper Clinics CORRECTED DATES

In a previous post, plainbaymare listed the annual spring clinic dates hosted by Sandhills Hunter Jumper incorrectly. This has been corrected in the previous post. The clinic dates are May 14-16, 2010. The clinic starts on Friday evening with flat work sessions only. Saturday and Sunday will focus on jumping at a variety of levels, beginner ground poles up to 2'6" and higher (if enough interest). The clinic will be at NCTA, Curtis with the clinician being Martha Deeds, an eventer from the Front Range.

While I'm talking about Sandhills Hunter Jumper, it would be a good time to mention their July clinic (July 9-10) and Schooling Show (July 11) at NCTA, Curtis. Plans are not finalized, but I believe dressage and jumping will both be included in this weekend. 4-Hers planning to show English at State 4-H are welcome to use this as an opportunity to "polish up" before heading to Grand Island.

As I receive more info on these 2 events, I'll be sure to post it. But, if you can't wait please contact the Sandhills Hunter Jumper secretary, Erin Aten, at erinleigh86@gpcom.net.

From the other side of the state: The North Hills Hunt Hunter Jumper Charity Show is scheduled for September 1-5, 2010 at Christensen Field in Fremont. For more info please contact Sherma Seitzinger, show secretary, at sherma@shermajs.com.

And with that I'm off to check heifers on the plain bay mare...

Pleasure/horsemanship (great 4-H) horse and speed horse for sale:
(From owner's email) I have a really nice show gelding for sale. He is an own son of Impulsions. You can view his breeding at the following site: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/impulse+command I had bought him for my show horse when I sold the sorrel mare that my daughter always rode. I showed him a little bit two summers ago and then this past summer a 13 year old girl from Juniata showed him all summer. He is a finished show horse and has had 18 months of professional training. He is a beautiful mover as he does not know how to four beat. He is good enough to be competitive in the senior 4-H age division in western pleasure and horsemanship. He would be suitable for a young person too. If you'd like more info, please contact Julie Otero, Lexington, at julie.otero@esu10.org

The second horse we have for sale is a 9 year old gelding for barrels and poles. He is a paternal grandson of Son Frost and you can view his breeding at the following site: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/ja+dox+frost+boy This horse has blinding speed and is very well patterned. He is a 1D contender. He has had limited showing the past two summers. The only reason it has been limited is that his rider has been hurt off and on for the past two years. He probably needs a more experienced rider. If you'd like more info, please contact Julie Otero, Lexington, at julie.otero@esu10.org

Horsin Around 2010 DVD's now available:

Arena Etiquette

I stole this snippet on arena etiquette from Dr. Peggy Auwerda's Grazing News (Iowa State University). To check out more from Iowa State's equine program, please visit http://www.extension.iastate.edu/livestock/horses.

• Be Aware and Think Ahead
Comment/explanation: Just like when you drive a car, you need to be aware of what is going on around you. Also, like a car, you and your fellow riders have trajectories that have to be accounted for. To stay safe, therefore, you need to be aware of where you and others are *now* AND where you and others are likely to be in the immediate future.

• The term "outside" is defined as the side of your body that is closest to the rail/arena fence, and the term "inside" is the side of your body that is closest to the center of the arena.
Comment/explanation: The concepts of "outside" and "inside" must be clear to all riders for the rest of arena etiquette to make any sense.

• If you are circling the arena, stay towards the outside.
Comment/explanation: This allows traffic to flow freely. If you want to ride circles, or other patterns/school figures, move to the inside *IF* you can do so safely, without interfering with games and games equipment. Proper spacing is 2 horse lengths or more distance from you and the horse in front of you.

• If you must stop for tack adjustment or for the rider’s needs, come to the center of the ring to do so.

• Do not mount or otherwise congregate in the entrance to the riding area.

• Passing other riders: When riding in an arena with more than one horse is present it is customary for the slower horse to take the inside track. The rider behind you may call out "rail" which should indicate to you to move over to the inside, if you haven’t already noticed them. If you are going in the opposite direction to the other horse riders should pass each other left hand to left hand.
Comment/explanation: As you ride around the arena, if you need to pass someone who is going slower than you in the same direction, Alert them ("Passing on your left/right") then pass on the inside. Do not crowd the other rider. If you see that you will pass a rider going in the opposite direction, pass left shoulder to left shoulder-just like driving in the US. Again, do not crowd the other rider.

NCTA Equestrian Team Fundraiser:
NCTA's Equestrian Team is selling Smelly Jellies ($5) and Stinky Sticks ($3.50) to raise $$ to travel to intercollegiate horse shows. What are Smelly Jellies and Stinky Sticks you're wondering? Smelly Jellies are handy little alternatives to candles and come in about 5 gazillion smells. I have leather and downy april fresh and they smell great. Stinky Sticks, in my words, are some kick butt good stink'ums for your pickup (or car or closet or tack room or dressing room in your trailer or anywhere else where you can think of). I have a stinky stick in my pickup and haven't actually taken it out of the bag since I put it in there in November and it still smells great. Stinky Sticks also come in about 5 gazillion smells. For more info on the Smelly Jellies and Stinky Sticks, please contact NCTA Equestrian Team member, Brian Kuntz, at

Horses looking for homes:
Want to let you know that Brenda Heins is trying to find homes for her neighbors two thoroughbreds. All I know one is a mare and probably would be best as a brood mare; and the other is a gelding between 4 and 7 years old. He's been on the track. Both seem to be gentle on the ground during feeding, but Brenda thinks the gelding probably would need an experienced rider, just because he's all thoroughbred. Anyone interested can cotnact Brenda at heins@cozadtel.net.

The NCTA's Equestrian Team will again be hosting their annual Shaggy Horse Show, Saturday, April 17, beginning at 8 am. English classes will start out the show, followed by halter and showmanship (plan is to split the arena to run 2 showmanship classes concurrently), and finish out the day with western and games. As soon as I have a flyer, I'll be sure to post it.

NCTA Youth Horse Camp, June 25-27:
Kids of all levels are welcome to bring their horse and stay at NCTA Friday, June 25 thru Sunday, June 27. If they don't have a horse, they are welcome to borrow one of the college's. This is the second year for the camp and from what I heard last year's was a lot of fun. Kids will work on horsemanship, speed events, horse judging and other things I can't remember off the top of my head. As soon as the activities are finalized, I will post more info about it. If interested, please contact Judy Bowmaster-Cole at jbowmaster1@unl.edu.

Horse Reality TV shows

Came along in an email and couldn't resist sharing (Thanks, Erin)...

Joanne Millionaire: Rich young women are first introduced to the exciting world of horses. They become completely hooked on the finest purebreds, the best trainers, fabulous stabling and expert instruction. In the last episode...they discover they're penniless.

Survivor-the Endurance Ride: Ten elite show riders leave their oak tacktrunks, their minimum wage grooms, their canopies and gooseneck living quarters behind to spend 2 days in Death Valley. They have to perform heinous acts such as cleaning their own tack, grooming and caring for their own horse, and getting along with other riders. As we sit back and watch riders succumb to torture, the strongest break away from camp to search for cell phone, golf cart and running water.

American Show Idol: Thousands of equestrians must audition in front of exacting judges who pick apart their ride using colorful evaluations such as "try tennis!" and "clucking to your horse makes you sound like a chicken". George Morris guest stars.

I'm a Dressage Queen, Get Me out of Here: A Prix St. Georges rider and her Hanoverian stallion are shipped to a working cattle ranch. In Episode 3, she ruins her full seat Eurostar breeches while closing the cattle gate. Unable to ride until her new attire is shipped, the local wrangler roundpens her horse and starts roping off his back.

Matched by America: Contestants who are tired of looking for Mr. or Ms. Equine Perfection allow the studio audience to vote on which horse is truly the best partner for them. Tossing breed and color preferences to the wind, contestants discover that: 1) a good horse can be any size, age, color; 2) when you find the right match, there can be happy endings...watch for more.

And a new sitcom...

Studs in the City: Two young, hip, good-looking round pen trainers share a New York apartment as they learn about life, work, & love in the city. In the pilot episode, Pat gets arrested after slapping his chaps at a girl who won't turn & face him (she turns out to be an undercover cop), and Roger ends up in the emergency room after trying to round-pen his new girlfriend's Siamese cat.

Horse Stuff, January 26, 2010

Finally catching up triggered more emails about horse stuff, so here goes...

Todd Morrison, North Platte, is standing a grandson of Paddy's Irish Whiskey. Hairpin Nip of Whiskey, or Nip as I like to refer to him, is a well-built, nice moving bay stallion with a pretty stacked pedigree and $500 stud fee for 2010. And believe it or not, I'm not just saying the nice things about him because of his color! A flyer (in pdf format) is available at Plain Bay Mare.

Those of you who know me, know I'm about the furthest thing from being a barrel racer there is. However, I have attended one barrel clinic in my life and hope to attend it again this year. Jeanne Mueller is putting on a barrel racing clinic March 27 and 28 at NCTA, Curtis. This clinic offers a lot in terms of basic horsemanship and training benefitting you regardless of your discipline. You can attend one or both days at $50/day/horse. Spectators are welcome at $10/head. If you are interested, please contact Jeanne at smueller@swnebr.net. A $25 deposit needs to be made by March 15. This clinic usually fills up fast, trust me on that one.

The National Versatility Ranch Horse Association (NVRHA) is hosting the Colorado Cowhands Ranch Horse Clinic and Competition, June 12 and 13, in Wellington, CO. Clinicians will be Jay and Gena Henson and results of the competion will apply toward NVRHA points and the finals held in September. The clinic is limited to 20 riders and is $275 for the clinic and competition. For more info, please contact Carol Ackerman, dradad@aol.com; Rita Lauby, ltlauby@ymail.com; or visit the NVRHA website, nvrha.org. If memory serves me right, NVRHA also hosts some events in Nebraska.

Some of you may or may not be aware of NCTA hosting an Equine Practicum in 2010, designed to cover a wide variety of equine topics. A flyer is available at Plain Bay Mare. If you're interested, but the price or dates do not work for you, don't give up just yet. Please contact Judy Bowmaster-Cole, jbowmaster1@unl.edu, or Jo Bek, tbek1@unl.edu, with your thoughts on what you'd like to see in the equine practicum.

Verla Schaer, Gordon, with the Plains Quarter Horse Association (PQHA), emailed the possibility of having a PQHA open show in Hyannis this year, possibly around Labor Day weekend. It's been a few years since Hyannis had a horse show on Labor Day, but if remember right the last one had a good turnout. They are also having open shows in Gordon, August 1 and 22. To find out more about these and other shows they'll be hosting, e-mail Verla at schaerqhorses@enebraska.net.

It always seems in the NP area, it's nothing to run to Lincoln or Omaha for horse events, but really Cheyenne/Ft. Collins are practically the same difference and Denver's not much further than that. So with that thought in mind, I felt it was okay to pass along some upcoming events from the Rocky Mountain Paint Horse Association. They're hosting a Scribe workshop March 6 in Denver and an English Equitation and Hunter Hack clinic March 13 in Brighton. I'll post the flyers at Plain Bay Mare.

Thanks for reading and if you have anything you'd like posted, please email it to plainbaymare@gmail.com.
